What’s your biz all about? Give us the lowdown!
DuskyDots is a full stack technology powerhouse based in Auckland that uses creativity and technology to help businesses and brands to sell better and be more efficient by using the right, modern and simple technology.
We help business owners, marketing & content/creative professionals and technology teams that are looking to bring new ideas, digital products, websites and web applications to life or are struggling with software and tech that are hard to use, slow, unappealing or inefficient.
We build websites and digital experiences that are fast and genuinely enjoyable to use, from enterprise websites to polished and interactive 3D experiences to support real business goals, whether that’s getting more sales, bookings, or engagement. We build custom software from the ground up, frontend, backend, APIs, cloud, and third-party integrations like AI, CRMs, cms, finance tools – all built the right way from day one.
We augment tech teams with our full stack capabilities joining forces to help them build, scale, and ship.
What made you take the leap and start your business?
Lucas and Danillo came from different backgrounds in tech and didn’t know each other at first but shortly after working together for a year, they realised they shared the same passion: getting close to clients, understanding the business inside out, and solving real problems.
In tech, it’s not always common for technical people to lean into the business or people side, but with us, it’s been the opposite. We’ve spent decades building things, and we genuinely enjoy talking to clients, understanding their goals, and architecting solutions.
When we realised this, we saw a powerful combination:
● Danillo is one of the most awarded creative developers in New Zealand, with decades of experience in design, frontend, and creative development.
● Lucas is a full stack developer who lives in the world of cloud, databases, APIs, and backend — and loves making sure things run smoothly under the hood.
Working together, the synergy just clicked. We could take a project from idea to delivery – whether it was a creative campaign, an interactive website, or a full SaaS product with a unique level of quality and care.
This passion turned into Dusky Dots and we’ve built our culture around that, combining quality, care, being customer-driven, and having a strong technical backbone.
Hit any big milestones or wins recently? Share the good news!
We started DuskyDots two years ago with zero funding — just a lot of drive and a clear vision. Over time, we’ve brought on new clients, worked on big projects, and now we’re heading into our third financial year.
We’re proud to be growing, partnering with more businesses, and building a team we’re genuinely excited about.
There’s no secret sauce, no magic. Just hard work, consistency, and a real passion for what we do. And we’re looking forward to keeping that going.
Best advice for small biz owners or freelancers?
Be humble and focus on understanding your customers goals, feelings and expectations by engaging with you or your product. Truly focus on understanding your customers and the problem you are solving.
As an example, we build custom software and websites, but at the end we care most about why the business needs them.
If a business needs a website to sell more, we are truly concerned if their sales are going well and they are not partnering with us to “just have a website or a software”, but to increase sales – and you should genuinely care about that. The engagement is far more than the specific service we provide, but if it’s helping the business reach their goals.
This psychology can be applied to any business or area, stay curious, be humble and put real effort into understanding the people you are working with.
What’s your #1 productivity hack?
Planning, and building backwards, which means starting with the outcome and goal you want to achieve.
Don’t just jump into tasks, define the goal, and understand the “why” behind your work. Then break it into tasks and get work done.
Why TW – What do you love about us?
We’d worked at The Workshop in Ponsonby before and had heard good things from word of mouth, so when we had to choose a new office for our business we went straightway for the Workshop. As we live nearby, this was really helpful for us as well.
The office vibe and energy, especially from The Workshop team, they are very friendly. The office space is open, fresh and well equipped – to be honest, we are lucky and spoiled by shared meals around the office often and other small activities – we truly see that The Workshop team cares about creating an engaging workplace for people.
Coworking vs. home or café – what’s the real difference?
My favourite part is to be able to connect and meet new people and learn from them.
How’s the Workshop vibe helped you level up your work?
We feel really welcomed at The Workshop and love its energy, and this impacts a lot in our work and productivity. We feel happy to come here every day, and enjoy the weekly catchups, talks and the space.
Three words to describe The Workshop – go!
Fun, Engaging, Sociable
Someone thinking about joining? What would you say to them?
Give it a try, book your first week and see it for yourself, you will get the chance to connect with other amazing people like yourself.
